There are few things I can think of that are better than our fresh easy dutch oven bread. Like very few. I mean any kind of homemade bread or carb is just SO much better than store bought. Making homemade bread can be intimidating and time consuming. This easy dutch oven bread is fool proof, promise! And what’s better, it takes minimal time and effort.
Ingredients needed for easy dutch oven bread
The ingredient list is short and sweet! The recipe only calls for:
All purpose flour
Salt
Sugar
Quick yeast- be sure you are using quick or rapid rise yeast and not regular
Garlic cloves
Fresh rosemary
Alternative Mix-ins
If you prefer not to use garlic or rosemary feel free to substitute a different herb or mix in! Here are some other mix in options:
Fresh or dried herbs both work, but fresh will provide a stronger flavor.
Try adding cheddar cheese and jalapeños.
Add cinnamon and raisins to make it sweet!
Everything but the bagel seasoning mixed in and brushed on top with melted butter when its finished baking.
Dried cranberries and walnuts would be another great option for a sweet bread.
Ways to Serve it
In my opinion this bread is best served fresh and warm with some butter. It can eaten as side or a snack. Here are some serving ideas:
Use it for a grilled cheese sandwich. The garlic and rosemary will flavor totally elevate your grilled cheese!
For a cold sandwich. This bread works great as a sandwich bread!
On the side of a bowl of soup like our chicken wild rice!
Make it into garlic bread by buttering and toasting in the oven.
A fresh loaf of bread is best if eaten within two to three days. It is best to store your bread in a paper bag on the counter. It will lose some of its crispiness on its outside crust due the moisture from being stored. If you would like the bread to regain some crispiness you can toast it.
Easy Dutch Oven Bread
Ingredients
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp sugar
- 2 tsps salt
- 1 pkg quick yeast
- 1 1/3 cups water warm
- 2 T fresh rosemary chopped
- 3 cloves garlic minced
Instructions
- Add yeast, sugar, and salt to a large bowl. Pour warm water in and stir to dissolve. Slowly stir in the flour. The dough will be sticky and "shaggy."
- Stir in the garlic and rosemary just to combine.
- Cover the bowl with a towel and let rise for one hour. Turn on your oven and set bowl on top for a warm place to rise.
- Lay out a large piece of parchment paper and dust it with flour. Place the dough on the parchment and shape the dough into a bowl. Fold and knead it until a ball forms. You may need to add flour ( a tablespoon at a time) if the dough is too sticky. Once a ball is formed flip the dough over the smooth side is up. It does not need to be perfect.
- Once the dough is shaped cover it with the towel again and let it rise another 20 minutes.
- Place the empty dutch oven in the oven and preheat your oven to 450. After twenty minutes carefully remove the hot dutch oven from the oven. Lift the bread by the parchment paper and set it in the dutch oven with the parchment paper.
- Score the bread on top down the middle with a sharp knife. Place the lid on the dutch oven and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes until the bread is golden brown.
- Lift the bread out with the parchment paper and let cool for 30 minutes before enjoying!
